We empower families by providing stability and security through homeownership of simple, decent, affordable homes.
This is not a give-away program. All of our families contribute 500 hours of labor – sweat equity – on either their own home or another partner-family’s home in addition to making monthly mortgage payments.
Habitat partner families are:
- Living between 25% and 60% of area median income (in Oregon that can be as low as $8000)
- Currently living in unaffordable or unsafe housing conditions
- Able to demonstrate stable work and credit history
- Willing to partner with Habitat by putting in 500 hours of “sweat equity” during the construction of their home or another partner family’s home, and attending budgeting and finance classes
The impact of housing on the lives of families runs deep. When a family owns the home they live in, they change the course of their children’s lives. Homeownership has been proven to:
- Raise academic scores and reduce behavioral problems at school
- Reduce the rates of teen pregnancy
- Improve attendance at school
- Lower rates of chronic childhood illnesses such as asthma (often caused or aggravated by dank conditions found in poverty housing)
Impacts of decent, affordable housing extend far beyond individual families, affecting the entire community. The availability of adequate housing:
- Revitalizes neighborhoods and raises property values
- Reduces the strain on education, public health, social service, law enforcement, criminal justice and welfare systems
- Brings increased tax revenues to the entire community
By providing a hand up, not a hand out, our program maintains the dignity and pride of our homeowner families.
