Habitat for Humanity Oregon: A close look at how safe, affordable and decent housing will aid an Oregon family

By Becky Willhite, Acting Office Manager, Habitat for Humanity Oregon

Monica Hale is a mother to two children, Naomi, 4-and-a-half and Ian who is 2-years-old. Monica moved to Salem, Oregon in 2001 to participate in the Youth With A Mission School, an international organization that conducts outreach, mercy work and English education in countries around the world. Monica and her husband, Ryan, have served in China, India, Australia, Kenya, Tanzania, and Azerbaijan (a small country near the Caspian Sea). They both feel, “That it is a privilege to serve God and show God’s love.”

They continue to work for Youth With A Mission and live on campus where housing is limited. They dreamed of owning their own home, but did not know how they could afford a home on their current income. They are very thankful to Habitat for Humanity for the opportunity to become home owners.

The Habitat for Humanity mission is to provide safe, decent and affordable housing for families in need. A cornerstone to becoming a Habitat for Humanity home owner is contributing “sweat equity.” Sweat equity provides meaningful interaction between the Habitat for Humanity organization and our partner families. It increases pride in ownership and provides family members with a real understanding of the construction of their home and awareness of maintenance issues. A family selected for a Habitat for Humanity home will be asked to fulfill 500 hours of sweat equity.

Monica had never used a hammer before the Habitat for Humanity training. When asked what it felt like to try that tool for the first time she responded with a loud and boisterous, “It was awesome!” But her new favorite tool is a drill and her husband loves the skill saw.

They hope to move into their new home this Spring of 2012. Monica looks forward to the security that a safe, affordable and decent home will bring to their family.

Habitat for Humanity of Oregon organized it’s 4th annual Fall Affiliate Conference in Eugene, Oregon this year on October 21st and 22nd for our 32 statewide affiliates as well as guest affiliates from Alaska and Washington.

In an effort to build a stronger HfHO, this conference aimed to bring together board members, staff, and volunteers to come together to learn, share and collaborate. More importantly, it was a time that allows affiliates to grow and strengthen their mission to make the dream of homeownership possible for deserving families throughout Oregon.

Overall, the conference was very successful. Affiliates were able to attend training for Board members, ReStore roles and relationships, Capacity Building, Disaster Planning, Family Selection and Support, and home rehabilitation. One of the most exciting presentations at the conference came from Oregon State University’s Beavers without Borders program, which came to share their experiences on a recent trip to Macedonia to build a home for a deserving family.

HFHO would like to thank everyone involved in the conference this year. Without you we wouldn’t have been able to put together one of the best HFHO conferences ever. We look forward to building on the foundation we laid this year for future conferences.

Marybeth Beall starts as the Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity of Oregon this month

Marybeth H. Beall of Salem has been hired as Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Oregon. She replaces Patricia Day TenEyck of Portland who served as ED since 2005 before accepting a leadership position in November with the Police Activities League of Greater Portland.

A Salem resident for 32 years, Beall was born and raised in Eugene. She is a graduate of Oregon State University and earned a Master’s Degree in Community Health Education from the University of Wisconsin–LaCrosse.

Beall has served as Executive Director of the Marion Polk Medical Society; Easter Seals Children’s Therapy Center and was Division Director and Interim Administrator of Marion County Health Department. A recent breast cancer survivor, she is currently Director of the YWCA Women’s Health Program.

She is Past President of the Rotary Club of Salem; a member of the Board of Directors of the Physician’s Choice Foundation and has been a long time supporter of the Mid-Willamette Valley Habitat for Humanity affiliate. In 2008, Beall traveled to El Salvador on a Habitat for Humanity home building mission trip sponsored by Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of Salem.

Beall begins with Habitat for Humanity Oregon in April and will relocate the state office from Portland to Salem where her duties include legislative advocacy in support of safe and affordable housing and home ownership.

Habitat for Humanity of Oregon provides advocacy and support for 33 independent Habitat affiliate offices throughout Oregon. Together, Habitat in Oregon is building a new foundation for thousands of hardworking Oregon families and forever changing the landscape of our communities, one home at a time.

“It is an honor and privilege to be leading an organization that does so much to promote individual and family self sufficiency and to improve housing standards and neighborhood livability in communities throughout Oregon,” says Beall.
